We use peat balls in many of our tanks which contain dwarf cichlids, angelfish and killifish.
The peat is from deep under an ancient peat bog; therefore it is very slimy (see video) unlike ordinary aquarium peat which is dried out. They last for months in an aquarium.
In our tanks, the peat balls buffer the water down to pH6-pH6.5 which is great for South American cichlids, tetras, killifish & rasboras.
Use 1 ball per 50 litres (11 gal.)

K1 filter media has neutral buoyancy so is perfect for use in moving bed filters.
Air driven moving bed filters are a popular choice for koi ponds but have recently been adopted by aquarium keepers who construct minature versions to keep ammonia and nitrite at zero in fish tanks.
We use moving bed filters in many of our cichlid tanks and water quality is excellent.
The video links below show how to build a moving bed filter cheaply. Use 1 litre K1 per 100 litres water in well stocked tanks.
